CLIFF WALK

Fitstyle Rundown

STEP GOAL: 10,000+
INTENSITY LEVEL:
EASY
ATTIRE: CASUAL/ATHLETIC
DISTANCE: ~6.0 MILES

This trip is for my history buffs and those who love an ocean view! The Cliff Walk in Rhode Island is the go-to fitstyle attraction in Newport. It’s a designated National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District. At 3 ½ miles long, this walk has A LOT to offer with varying terrain that offers casual strolls on paved sidewalks to more rigorous walking along rocky footpaths and sandy lanes.

A Perfect Day Date
My husband and I chose Newport as a spur of the moment day date. We went in the springtime when things weren’t quite so green. (You definitely still needed to wear a coat outside, especially with the ocean breeze, but views were still spectacular.). We didn't go into any of the mansions on this trip, but they’re open for tours and are basically museums now. (They’re definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been. It’s like walking into The Great Gatsby!)

Choose your own adventure

What’s great about the Cliff Walk is that you can pick and choose how long you want your walk to be and where along the route you want to start - wherever you choose, you’re in for AMAZING views of not only the ocean, but also spectacular historic mansions built in the 19th century!

The walk takes about 1 -1.5 hours one way if you keep walking and don’t stop too often for photos :)

This is a kids friendly walk, depending on their age. If you’ve got small children, you’ll definitely want to stick with the paved areas. (There are some parts of the trail with 70 foot drops and no barriers! But you don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to do this walk either.)

What’s nice about going in an off-season is that parking is abundant and you don’t have the crowds that you’ll see in the warmer months.

It’s easy to walk from the Cliff Walk into downtown where you’ll find most of the shops and restaurants, which will help you rack up even more steps!

My Step Count: ~15,456

Fitstyle Itinerary:

  • Park at Easton’s Beach (walking distance of the Cliff Walk entrance)

  • Walk the full length of the Cliff Walk

  • Lunch at Brick Alley Pub (recommended by a Newport summertime veteran :), but watch out, the line can be very long!)

  • Walked back to our car along the streets of Newport. (Some of this is more neighborhood like and not as spectacular as the Cliff Walk. You can also take a trolley back to Easton Beach if you need a break.)

Amp It Up!

Here are a couple fun ways to add a challenge to your adventure:

  • Do a set of 12 squats or calf raises every time you pass one of the mansions.
  • Try running the full length of the Cliff Walk!
