3 Tips for Resolutions That Stick

We all set goals with the intention of making the next year a better one, but did you know that only 8% of people who make resolutions actually keep them? We want to eat better, exercise more, spend less, save more, and yet we often find ourselves stuck in the same behavior we are trying to change. So why is it so hard to stick to those good intentions?

What prevents us from keeping those resolutions?

Sometimes it’s because our goals aren’t SMART (no, we’re not being mean!). S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific Measurable Relevant Achievable and Timely. When we overgeneralize our resolutions it makes them hard to accomplish.  We say things like “eat better” or “save more” and that leaves us without a sense of direction on how to make it happen. Other times, we take on more than what’s manageable.

Another reason our resolutions fall flat is because of something called the identity behavior gap. This often happens when we set lofty unrealistic goals that relate to the type of person we wish to become. For instance, setting the goal of running a marathon because you want to be more athletic.  This happens most often when we share our resolutions with a group that is highly identity relevant (i.e. in a group fitness class at the gym, or with coworkers who go for runs on their lunch breaks). We tend to feel that the group sees us in a new way and feel less compelled to actually get it done! So how do we set resolutions we can stick with?

Try these three easy tips.

  1. Consider quality of life

When you set a specific resolution pay attention to the phase of life you’re currently in and the quality of life you want to have. Resolutions that stretch your already tight schedule or do not meet the flexibility you need throughout the week won’t last. Expensive gym memberships that squeeze your budget or 5 am pilates when you’ve got a newborn or a demanding job may not be the right fit.

2. Find the fun factor

Your resolutions should make you smile. You should enjoy the thought of working to accomplish them. Find the fun in your goal. Want to exercise every day? Find movement that you enjoy - whether it’s an evening walk with your family, an online class with coworkers, or even a dance party in your kitchen. Find the fun in it!

3. Less is more

Just like in movement, every step counts. Ask yourself what’s the smallest first step I can make that will move me towards my goal? Starting small gives you the time to build your resolution into your routine and helps you be consistent. There’s an African proverb that says “Little by little, a little becomes a lot.” It’s a great reminder that small steps add up to big achievements.

You’re not in it by yourself.

Studies show that shouting it from the rooftops may put you in that identity behavior gap we mentioned earlier, but as with all resolutions, some form of accountability is key to success - and that’s why I’m here. I’d love to be your accountability partner.
